{"id":918,"date":"2017-01-26T19:03:16","date_gmt":"2017-01-26T15:03:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/armeniancause.net\/?p=918"},"modified":"2017-03-31T19:33:42","modified_gmt":"2017-03-31T15:33:42","slug":"danish-parliament-passes-questionable-bill-regarding-armenian-genocide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/armeniancause.net\/?p=918","title":{"rendered":"Danish Parliament Passes Questionable Bill Regarding Armenian Genocide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Bill Challenges Turkey\u2019s Restrictions on Armenian Genocide Speech<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">(<a href=\"http:\/\/armenianweekly.com\/2017\/01\/26\/danish-parliament-2017-bill-armenian-genocide\/\">armenianweekly.com<\/a>) COPENHAGEN, Denmark\u2014The Danish Parliament (Folketing) adopted a new resolution regarding the Armenian Genocide on Jan. 26, which recognizes the \u201ctragic and bloody events that took place in eastern Anatolia in the period 1915-1923,\u201d and states that the best way for reconciliation is through open dialogue on the basis of a \u201cfree and uncensored history research, including the release of all official documents from the period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While the bill criticizes Turkey and the fact that the term \u201cgenocide\u201d cannot freely be used by its citizens and media, it does not specifically label the Armenian Genocide as such\u2014except for in its title. The bill also states that the Parliament \u201cmaintains its parliamentary tradition not to issue judgments about historical events.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After over two hours of discussion on the document brought to the Folketing agenda by Parliamentarians Nick H\u00e6kkerup, S\u00f8ren Espersen, Michael Aastrup Jensen, Henrik Dahl, Martin Lidegaard, and Naser Khader, the Danish Parliament voted 89 to 9 with 11 abstentions to pass the measure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe Parliament confirms its decision no. V 54 of 19 May 2015 on the tragic and bloody events that took place in eastern Anatolia in the period 1915-1923. The Danish Parliament finds that the best path to reconciliation will be an open dialogue about the story on the basis of a free and uncensored history research, including the release of all official documents from the period. The Parliament regrets that Turkish law prohibits citizens and media to use the term \u2018genocide\u2019 about the events, and considers this to be an unreasonable restriction of both academic freedom as freedom of expression relates to the use of this term. Parliament maintains its parliamentary tradition not to issue judgments about historical events,\u201d reads the adopted bill.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2015, the Danish Parliament <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.dk\/samling\/20141\/vedtagelse\/v54\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">adopted a measure<\/a>, which recognized the \u201cdeportations, massacres and other atrocities\u201d that had been committed against the Armenian population Anatolia in 1915-1923. Folketinget beklager, at tyrkisk lovgivning forbyder borgere og medier at bruge betegnelsen \u00bbfolkedrab\u00ab om begivenhederne, og finder, at dette udg\u00f8r en urimelig begr\u00e6nsning af s\u00e5vel forskningsfriheden som ytringsfriheden uden hermed at forholde sig til anvendelsen af denne ben\u00e6vnelse.
